Topic : Railway history and Sion church

Dear Sir,

I am a Mumbai-based railway historian trying to trace the route and the relics of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, the first railway in India. During one of my readings, I came across a reference to a Portuguese Church, which was located somewhere near Sion. It would be possible that the church would still be there.

The Illustrated London News dated 4 June 1853 said that “At Sion, it (the railway) passes under the public road and along the base of the hill, on the summit of which is an old Marathi fort, and a Portuguese church contiguous.”

I have visited Sion and tried to find out the church, but in vain.

Would it be still there? Do you or any of your acquaintances have an idea about its existence or history? Even if you can find the name of the church, it would make things easier for me to trace its present location. You may also forward the query to all who can help on this matter.

Regards and thanks
